Kill la Kill is a Japanese anime series produced by Trigger. The series was directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi and written by Kazuki Nakashima, both of whom had previously worked together on Gurren Lagann. Kill la Kill  premiered in Japan on MBS between October 3, 2013 and March 27, 2014.

In North America Aniplex of America licensed the series for a home video release as well as an English subbed simulcast on Daisuki.net, Crunchyroll, and Hulu.[2][3] A followup OVA was released on September 3, 2014.

The English dub of the series, produced by Bang Zoom! Entertainment, aired on Adult Swim's Toonami block from February 7, 2015[1] to August 1, 2015. From October 3, 2015 to April 9, 2016, the series returned to the block for a second run in the 3:00 AM time slot. The series is rated TV-MA-LSV on Adult Swim.

PlotEdit

Kill la Kill is set at Honnouji Academy, a fictional high school situated in Tokyo Bay, Japan. The school is dominated by its fearsome student council, led by Satsuki Kiryuin. Its students wear Goku uniforms + sailor uniforms which give their wearers superhuman abilities because they are constructed with a special material known as Life Fibers. Transfer student Ryuko Matoi, who wields a scissor-shaped longsword that can cut Goku Uniforms, challenges the council as she searches for her father's killer. Although she is initially easily defeated, she finds a sentient sailor uniform named Senketsu, a Kamui ("God Robe") which is completely made of Life Fibers, which transforms her so that she can face Kiryuin and her trials and obstacles. She is befriended by her hyperactive classmate Mako Mankanshoku, and lives with her family.

CharactersEdit

Ryuko Matoi — Ryuko is the main protagonist and a 17-year-old vagrant schoolgirl who transfers to Honnouji Academy in search of clues relating to the death of her father. She wields the Scissor Blade, one-half of a giant pair of scissors created by her father, with the other half stolen by his killer. Her weapon is capable of destroying uniforms empowered by Life Fibers. At the start of the series, she acquires a special "Kamui" uniform named Senketsu, which grants her special abilities. She lives with the Mankanshoku family.

Senketsu — A talking sailor uniform that Ryuko finds beneath her house, Senketsu is a Kamui ("Godrobe"), an outfit made entirely of Life Fibers, which provides its wearer with superhuman abilities in exchange for their blood. Initially, it absorbs a large amount of her blood and only allows her to act for a limited time, however, it is soon able to fully synchronize with Ryuko as she gets over her embarrassment of wearing such a skimpy outfit.

Mako Mankanshoku — An energetic second-year student and Ryuko's classmate, Mako immediately befriends Ryuko upon the latter's arrival at the school. Mako lives with her parents and younger brother in the slums of Honnouji. She is described as an "uber air-head" whose "unbelievable actions never cease to shock and awe the people around her." Despite putting herself in dangerous situations, she has a good heart and cares for Ryuko, providing her with constant encouragement. Senketsu notes that Mako is vital for getting Ryuko to relax.

Satsuki Kiryuin — Satsuki is the 18-year-old ruthless student council president of Honnouji Academy. She administers Goku Uniforms to students using various hierarchical schemes such as a no-late day, and battle royale-esque tournaments such as the Naturals Election. She wields a katana named Bakuzan, which can sever Life Fibers; and dons the Kamui named Junketsu early in the series. She serves as an antagonist to Ryuko for most of the series.

Aikuro Mikisugi — Aikuro is Ryuko's enigmatic homeroom teacher. He secretly observes and aids Ryuko by leading her to Senketsu. Whilst generally having the appearance of a frail, shaggy teacher, he is actually a glamorous smooth-talker with a habit of slowly stripping his clothes and making moves on Ryuko whenever they are in private, much to Ryuko's chagrin. Whenever he strips, pink light radiates from his nipples and from his crotch, obscuring them.

Uzu Sanageyama — Uzu regulates the athletic clubs at Honnouji Academy, including the boxing and tennis clubs. He himself specialises in kendo and possesses the three-star Goku Uniform, Blade Regalia, which takes the form of a large armored bōgu. He initially possesses Tengantsū (Clairvoyance), which allows to him to predict his opponent's moves with super fast eyesight.

Houka Inumuta — Houka is in charge of Honnouji Academy's information and strategy committee, aiding the student council by analyzing the performance of Goku Uniforms and Kamui in battle, and helping the Sewing Club with upgraded uniforms. His three-star Goku Uniform, Probe Regalia, allows him to quickly calculate attack trajectories and use optical camouflage to hide from his opponents.

Ira Gamagoori — An imposing figure, Ira is Satsuki's loyal enforcer who leads the disciplinary committee at Honnouji Academy. His three-star Goku Uniform is the Shackle Regalia, which takes the form of bondage gear. By enduring such masochistic attacks, he can activate its second transformation, Scourge Regalia, which covers his body in thorny whips. He is 20 years old, having waited two years after graduating middle school before enrolling at Honnouji to assist Satsuki with her plans. He drives a pink 1959 Cadillac Eldorado.

Nonon Jakuzure — Nonon regulates the school's non-athletic clubs, such as the gardening and biology clubs. Among the members of the Elite Four, she has been with Satsuki since kindergarten and thus claims that she knows her best. She possesses the three-star Goku Uniform Symphony Regalia, which transforms into a giant sound system that produces powerful soundwaves and can transform into a flying airship.
