Space Dandy (stylized as Space☆Dandy) is a Japanese anime series directed by Shinichiro Watanabe and produced by Bones. The series has also received a manga adaptation in Square Enix's Young Gangan that began on December 20, 2013.[5] The anime was licensed in the United States by Funimation who produced an English dub that premiered in the United States, before the series aired in Japan. The English dub aired on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block from January 4, 2014 to January 31, 2015.[1][6][7] The series aired in Japan from January 5, 2014 to September 28, 2014 on Tokyo MX, followed by TV Osaka, TV Aichi and BS Fuji.[6][7] Space Dandy was the first series to make its world television premiere on the revived Toonami block on Adult Swim. The series is rated TV-14-DLSV, with episode 25 being TV-PG-V.

Plot[]

Space Dandy is a dandy guy in space! This dreamy adventurer with a to-die-for pompadour travels across the galaxy in search of aliens no one has ever laid eyes on. Each new species he discovers earns him a hefty reward, but this dandy has to be quick on his feet because it’s first come – first served! Accompanied by his sidekicks, a rundown robot named QT and Meow the cat-looking space alien, Dandy bravely explores unknown worlds inhabited by a variety aliens. Join the best dressed alien hunter in all of space and time as he embarks on an adventure that ends at the edge of the universe!

Characters[]

Dandy — The main character of the series, Dandy is an easygoing alien hunter whose job is to locate and apprehend specimens of rare unclassified creatures across the galaxy. He is the captain of the Aloha Oe, his personal spaceship. His life mission is to visit all the intergalactic locations of a restaurant known as "Boobies" and indulge in his fetish. His age is unclear, but he is most likely in his late 20s.

Meow — One of Dandy's partners, Meow is a dimwit cat-like alien from the Betelgeuse star, whose alien breed is named after the star. Like Dandy, he enjoys ogling the girls at "Boobies". His name, "Meow", was given to him by Dandy since neither he nor QT could understand his real name.

QT — Dandy's other partner and a proud robot that resembles (and also works as) a vacuum cleaner. QT claims to be high-power, but is actually just a bucket of bolts. QT's software is also out of date, like most of the other devices on Dandy's ship. As such, QT is prone to memory shorts and battery outages. As a vacuum, QT understandably likes tidiness.

Toonami Broadcast History[]

The series premiered in the United States on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block at 11:30 PM on January 4, 2014. In order to make room for the new addition, the Toonami block was expanded by half an hour and began starting at 11:30 PM.[1][6][7] On May 3, 2014, with the completion of season 1, reruns of Space Dandy moved to 12:30 AM and Attack on Titan took over the 11:30 PM time slot.[8]

Season 2 made its premiere at the end of a 3-episode mini marathon titled the Space Dandy Premiere-athon which aired on Toonami on July 5, 2014 from 11:30 PM - 1:00 AM.[9] New episodes then proceeded to premiere weekly at 12:30 AM. The series moved to the 11:30 PM time slot on August 30, 2014, for one week only, due to a 6-hour Attack on Titan marathon that aired from 12:00-6:00 AM.[10] The final episode of season two made its premiere on September 27, 2014 and reruns of the entire series moved to the 3:00 AM time slot the following week.[11][2] The series was pre-empted on October 11th by an extra long episode of Hellsing Ultimate and for the entire month of December by a month of movies. The series returned to Toonami on January 3, 2015 and moved to the 3:30 AM time slot.[12] It returned to the 3:00 AM time slot on January 24, 2015 but only lasted two weeks before the Toonami block was shortened to just 3 hours on February 7th. This resulted in Space Dandy, among other series, being abruptly pulled from the lineup.[13][14]

Reruns of the series returned to the block at 2:30 AM on January 27, 2018, replacing Lupin the Third in the lineup.[3] The series moved to 2:00 AM on March 24, 2018.[15] On March 31st (technically April 1st), the series aired with Japanese audio and English subtitles as part of Toonami's April fools surprise. The following week (April 7th) the series moved back to the 2:30 Am time slot. The series completed its run on August 4, 2018, and was subsequently replaced in the lineup by reruns of One Punch Man.[4]

  • Toonami (United States) — January 4, 2014[1] - January 31, 2015[2]; January 27, 2018[3] - August 4, 2018[4]
