Space Dandy (stylized as Space☆Dandy) is a Japanese anime series directed by Shinichiro Watanabe and produced by Bones. The series follows Dandy, an alien hunter who is "a dandy guy in space", in search for aliens with his robot assistant QT and a cat alien named Meow. The series has also received a manga adaptation in Square Enix's Young Gangan that began on December 20, 2013.[3]

The anime was licensed in the United States by Funimation and the series premiered in the United States before Japan on January 4, 2014 at 11:30 PM on Adult Swim's Toonami block.[1][4][5] The series premiered in Japan at 11:00 PM on January 5th on Tokyo MX, followed by TV Osaka, TV Aichi and BS Fuji.[4][5] Space Dandy was the first series to make its world television premiere on the revived Toonami block on Adult Swim. The series is rated TV-14-DLSV, with episode 25 being TV-PG-V.

On May 3, 2014, with the completion of season 1, Space Dandy was moved to 12:30 AM and Attack on Titan took its place at 11:30 PM.[6] Season 2 of Space Dandy began airing on Toonami on July 5, 2014 at 12:30 AM.[7] From October 4, 2014 to January 31, 2015 reruns of the series aired on Toonami in a later time slot.[8][2]

Plot

Space Dandy is a dandy guy in space! This dreamy adventurer with a to-die-for pompadour travels across the galaxy in search of aliens no one has ever laid eyes on. Each new species he discovers earns him a hefty reward, but this dandy has to be quick on his feet because it’s first come – first served! Accompanied by his sidekicks, a rundown robot named QT and Meow the cat-looking space alien, Dandy bravely explores unknown worlds inhabited by a variety aliens. Join the best dressed alien hunter in all of space and time as he embarks on an adventure that ends at the edge of the universe!

Characters

Dandy — The main character of the series, Dandy is an easygoing alien hunter whose job is to locate and apprehend specimens of rare unclassified creatures across the galaxy. He is the captain of the Aloha Oe, his personal spaceship. His life mission is to visit all the intergalactic locations of a restaurant known as "Boobies" and indulge in his fetish. His age is unclear, but he is most likely in his late 20s.

Meow — One of Dandy's partners, Meow is a dimwit cat-like alien from the Betelgeuse star, whose alien breed is named after the star. Like Dandy, he enjoys ogling the girls at "Boobies". His name, "Meow", was given to him by Dandy since neither he nor QT could understand his real name.

QT — Dandy's other partner and a proud robot that resembles (and also works as) a vacuum cleaner. QT claims to be high-power, but is actually just a bucket of bolts. QT's software is also out of date, like most of the other devices on Dandy's ship. As such, QT is prone to memory shorts and battery outages. As a vacuum, QT understandably likes tidiness.
